VISIT CHITTAGONG SHIPBREAKERS BANGLADESH

On 5 October 2009 the GreenDock team visited the Chittagong ship breaking yards. On our flight from Dhaka to Chittagong we flew over the area where the ships were dismantled/broken apart, as you can see on the picture below the sea is polluted over a great area with oil and chemicals.

The New Treaty on Ship-Breaking

The IMO conference is called a great success due to the fact that 66 countries signed a new treaty to make ship-breaking safer, but it is not going to really change the way ships are being dismantled says Henk Beekhuis Project Manger from Greendock, an organization who is on the way to build their first Greendock 0-pollution ship-dismantling yard in Cambodia.

Artikel: GreenDock means ship dismantling can be environmentally friendly and commercially attractive

What approach should a responsible society take to ship dismantling? The current practice of beaching scrap vessels in poor Asian countries and letting the local population take care of the dirty and dangerous demolition work does not belong in the twenty-first century. So two Dutch entrepreneurs have devised the GreenDock®: a concept that enables ships to be demolished in a way that is environmentally friendly, safe and commercially viable. 22 juni 2007 - Sloopwerf Ecodock definitief ter ziele

eemshaven -  Ecodock is definitief ter ziele.

07 juni 2005 - Funding for Eemshaven dismantling yard in place
After several months of negotiation, the agreements for the funding of NV Ecodock’s first ship dismantling yard have been signed. The 64 million euro yard will be built in Eemshaven and will therefore be the world’s first environmentally-friendly yard for the dismantling of ships, platforms and other maritime vessels. The yard in Eemshaven will initially provide work for around 100 people.

05 november 2004 - Opdracht ontmanteling Sandrien verstrekt

05 november 2004 - Contract for dismantling of Sandrien awarded
The Netherlands Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (V&W) and the City of Amsterdam (the Amsterdam Port Authority) have awarded Amsterdam Ship Repair and Ecodock the contract for dismantling the Sandrien. This unique contract brings the current environmentally harmful approach to the dismantling of ships to a stop.
